Women’s reservation

The Congress party is the strongest supporter of women’s reservation, and it has always been Congress’s vision. The credit for bringing lakhs of women into grassroots political leadership in the last 25–30 years should go to late Shri Rajiv Gandhi and the Congress party, who initiated reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions and local bodies. It was Rajiv Gandhi’s dream.
If Prime Minister Modi had remembered Shri Rajiv Gandhi on this occasion and acknowledged the efforts made during the UPA government, it would have created a positive atmosphere in Parliament between the treasury benches and the opposition. However, in his speech, Mr. Modi tried to mislead the people of the country by giving an impression that the Congress and other opposition parties are opposing women’s reservation, while the truth is that everyone supports it.
The Prime Minister had the opportunity to bring both sides together on such an important issue, but instead, he used it to mislead the public. On such a significant matter, did he discuss it with the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Shri Rahul Gandhi?
No one is against women’s reservation, but there is an attempt to carry out delimitation under its cover. On the issue of delimitation, were all states, including the southern states & other stakeholders consulted?
It is also important to remember that it was the Congress party’s vision that gave India its first woman President, Smt. Pratibha Patil, and a woman Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi. Smt. Meira Kumar became the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and many other women have held leadership positions. However, the BJP has never had a woman as its national president so far.
